The Writing Center offers free in-person (face-to-face) tutoring to students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.

In-person tutoring is appropriate for students at all levels of mastery with any academic writing concern.  In order to get the most out of our service, please keep in mind the following:

  • Whether in-person or via email, students are limited to two tutorial consultations per week.
  • Working with a tutor is not the same as hiring an editor.  The tutor will offer suggestions for improving your paper and direction for developing your writing skills, but any revisions will be made by you.
  • Bring to the session a draft of your paper (if you have one), along with any notes or ideas, and the instructions for the assignment.
  • In a typical session, a tutor will be able to focus on either mechanical issues like grammar, usage, and punctuation or content issues like argument development, organization, flow, etc.  Both cannot be completed in one session.
  • Sessions are 50-minutes in duration during which time the tutor can read and respond to up to 5 double-spaced pages of text.
  • If your paper is longer than 5 double-spaced pages, you may decide to make an appointment for another session.  Often, however, the suggestions made during one session can be applied to the remainder of the paper.
  • If you are working on a much longer paper, such as a master’s thesis, our read-ahead service may be appropriate for you.  Read-ahead tutoring is for students looking to make substantial revisions to argument, focus, or organization; it is not intended for proofreading.  For read-ahead tutoring, email up to 25 double-spaced pages to GVWritingCenter@psu.edu at least 5-days in advance of your appointment.  In the subject line, please type your last name in capital letters along with the words, “Read Ahead Tutoring,” e.g., SMITH – Read Ahead Tutoring.
