To all students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program, the Writing Center offers free in-person consultations with the writing coach.
The goal of writing support services is to help you, the student, become an independent writer and effective self-editor. To this end, and in order to ensure that all students seeking support can be accommodated, the Writing Center has established the following policies:
- Students are limited to 1 consultation per week, 2 per assignment (e.g., a planning session and a review session), and no more than 4 consultations during a 7-week term.
- We do not schedule standing appointments. Appointments can be made up to 2-weeks in advance; we recommend scheduling your appointment at least 1-day in advance.
- The writing coach will not proofread your paper and consulting with her does not guarantee a "perfect" paper or a particular grade. Students are responsible for their own work.
What to Expect
During an hour-long consultation, the writing coach will read your draft (or she may ask you to read aloud) and evaluate it for surface-level issues of style and mechanics or content issues of argument development and organization. Both cannot be completed in one session. The writing coach will then discuss ways to revise your paper with the aim of helping you develop your research and composition skills overall.
Depending on the level of writing, the writing coach can evaluate up to 8 double-spaced pages of text in one session. Students working on longer projects, such as capstone or master’s papers, should contact the writing coach to make arrangements for support.
What to Bring
Bring to the session a typed, double-spaced hard copy of your paper (if you have completed a draft), instructions for the assignment, and any questions for the writing coach.
