NOTE:  To start the Reading Specialist certification, you need:

  • Certification I in elementary or a content area.  If you do not have this certification, see your academic advisor, Dr. Arlene Mitchell, prior to taking courses.
  • A passing grade on Penn State University’s Pre-Certification Exam on Educating the Handicapped in PA OR a Special Education course. Another option in place of the University’s Pre-certification exam is the PATTAN course, which is a FREE 4 week, 15 hour interactive online course. After completing this course, verification MUST be sent to the Education Division at Great Valley.  Visit www.pattan.k12.pa.us  to register for the PATTAN course.
  • To take the PRAXIS Reading Specialist Exam – Qualifying score is 570. Contact information for PRAXIS is 1-800-772-9476 or e-mail praxis@ets.org  or www.ets.org/praxis
  • To earn an M.Ed. in Literacy as well as the certification, students complete a master's paper (3 credits) for a total of 39 credits.
