Scholarship Established in Remembrance of Dr. Effy Oz

A scholarship has been established to honor Dr. Effy Oz, professor of management and information science at Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies, who died of a heart attack in July 2008. The “Dr. Effy Oz Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Business Education” will benefit graduate students at Penn State Great Valley.

Dr. Oz was passionate about teaching and Penn State. He served on numerous committees at the School, including serving as the former Faculty/Senate chair. Dr. Oz wrote several books, including a popular textbook on management information systems. His son Sahar said his father loved teaching and this scholarship will be a fitting way to recognize his dedication.

A native of Israel, Dr. Oz was a veteran of the Israel Defense Forces. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 1984 he left his position as controller of Israel Aerospace Industries to pursue a career in academia. While earning a doctorate in management information systems from Boston University, he taught at that school and at Boston College. He then taught at Wayne State University in Michigan for five years and in 1996 joined Penn State, where he taught management science and information systems.

Dr. OZ is survived by his wife Narda Green Oz; sons Sahar, Ron and Noam; and daughter Adi; a sister; and a granddaughter.

First Nittany Networking Event a Success!

On Thursday, June 17, 2008, 85 Penn State alums from the greater Philadelphia area met at Penn State Great Valley’s Safeguard Scientifics building for an evening of networking, refreshments and fun with fellow alumni.

This event featured Penn State alumni who shared their experiences on the power of the Penn State network. Cheryl Bonner, director of Alumni Career Services, discussed tips on using the Penn State connection for career and business success. This special evening also featured networking opportunities, door prizes, and the biggest hit of the evening- Creamery ice-cream.

“This was a great event, I’m so glad I decided to come at the last minute,” said Lisa Altomare, ’80 Lib. “I really enjoyed meeting other Penn Staters and learning about more Penn State Great Valley. I hope Penn State hosts more of these in the future!”

The program was sponsored by Penn State Alumni Career Services, Penn State Great Valley Development and Alumni Relations, and Penn State Great Valley Alumni Society.
