Penn State Great Valley Professor Elected to Prestigious IEEE Post

Phil Laplante, professor of software engineering at Penn State Great Valley, has been elected to the IEEE Computer Society’s Board of Governors. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology with more than 370,000 members in more than 160 countries, and the Computer Society includes approximately 90,000 members.

Laplante, of West Chester, has served in many capacities for the IEEE during his career, including periodicals committee chair and conference publications chair. He also earned the organization’s Educational Activities Board Meritorious Service Award in 2005 for contributions to continuing education in engineering. He is a fellow of the SPIE international society for optical engineering and is active in a number of professional organizations.

Of the latest IEEE appointment, Laplante, a Penn State Great Valley faculty member for seven years, said: "It is an honor to be selected by my peers to help the IEEE Computer Society frame research and policy issues that affect 90,000 computing professionals worldwide."

Penn State Great Valley Engineering Division Head James Nemes added: "This is an extremely prestigious honor that reflects well, not only on Phil’s accomplishments, but also on Penn State Great Valley."
