MALVERN - The Penn State Great Valley Graduate Center celebrates Black History Month with a writing contest and a performance by a traditional African-American dance troupe on Thursday, February 24 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Main Lobby.
High-school students from the Church Farm School and Kennett Square High School were invited to write essays to provide a forum for expression honoring the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. The topic was how the youth of today see their role in encouraging peers to use their voting rights to address such issues as poverty, substance abuse and affirmative action.
The award winning essays will be read by the student-authors in a special presentation starting at 4:30 p.m. in the Main Lobby.
Following the writing contest presentations, The Kuumba Dance Troupe of West Chester, will delight the audience with a variety of traditional African-American dances. This youth and drum ensemble, dressed in colorful costumes, range in ages from four to forty.
