Instructional I Teacher Certification in Special Education
This program prepares educators to teach students with special needs and to qualify for special education certification. You may combine the Instructional I Certification with the M.Ed. in special education degree program.
To receive an institutional recommendation for certification, you must complete the required credits with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Admission requirements
To be admitted, you will need to

hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university;

have a minimum junior/senior grade-point average of 3.0 (on a scale of 4.0);

submit all necessary forms, documentation, and fees;

You may begin in September, January, May, or June at the start of each session. During the academic year – September through April – we offer classes in a 14-week format, 1 evening a week or a half-day on Saturdays. Seven-week sessions are offered in the summer.
Degree requirements
Students typically complete 45 credits of Instructional I certtification.
During the program, you will complete all requirements for PDE certification including taking the Praxis exam.
NOTE: You will need to meet with the special education academic adviser to design a plan of study.

• SPLED 404 (3) Working with Families and Professionals
• SPLED 412 (4) Instruction for Students with Mild Disabilities
• SPLED 495E (3) Experience with Exceptional Children (Form and clearances needed)
• SPLED 595B.201 (6) Field Experience in Off Campus Laboratories
• EDTHP 411 (3) Ethnic Minorities and Schools in the United States
or any
EDTHP 400 level course
