“Best practices” in organizations are often not followed. At times, women and people of color face barriers to career advancement due to disregard for these practices.
Dr. Janice L. Dreachslin, professor of Health Policy and Administration at Penn State Great Valley will present, “Moving Diversity Leadership from Wishful Thinking to Organizational Reality,” for the local chapter of the National Association of Female Executives, Chester County Women. She will be joined by Dr. Anita Foeman from West Chester University. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Safeguard Scientifics Building at Penn State Great Valley. The presentation will include a comprehensive model of factors that are key to career advancement for women and people of color in management.
Dr. Janice L. Dreachslin is a tenured Professor of Health Policy and Administration in the Management Division at the Penn State Great Valley Graduate Center in Malvern, Pennsylvania and is professor in charge of biotechnology and health industry management for the campus. Her Ph.D. was awarded in 1979 by Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She also holds a B.A. in Sociology from Wayne State University and was made a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1970. She is the recipient of the 1994 Penn State Great Valley Graduate Center award for teaching excellence, the 1999 award for service excellence, and the 2003 award for excellence in research and scholarship.
Dr. Dreachslin has worked in the fields of health and human service administration for over twenty-five years. She has consulted in the United States, Canada, and Great Britain and is the author of numerous publications and presentations in health industry and general management. Dr. Dreachslin is author of the book, Diversity Leadership, published in June 1996 by the American College of Healthcare Executive’s Health Administration Press. She has published articles in Health Policy, Medical Care, the Journal of Healthcare Management, and Social Science and Medicine, among others. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Health Organization and Management.
With extensive professional as well as academic experience, Dr. Dreachslin has served as Director of Consulting Services at the private not-for profit Commission on Professional and Hospital Services and maintains an active consulting practice in diversity leadership. She is a member of the American Public Health Association, the Academy of Management, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Dreachslin and her collaborators received the 1999 ACHE Health Management Research Award for their Survey of Diversity Practices in Pennsylvania Hospitals.
Dr. Dreachslin chairs the Association of University Programs in Health Administration’s (AUPHA) Diversity Forum and led an initiative to define domains and core competencies for diversity leadership in health services management nationwide. She is an appointed member of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership’s (NCHL) Recruitment and Diversity Council and recently completed a study commissioned by NCHL of factors that affect career advancement for women and people of color in health services management.
