M.Ed. in Curriculum:  Science Education

The M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Science Education helps educators extend their knowledge and skills in science teaching, science content, and science education research.    Course work focuses on exemplary science education practices for elementary, middle, and high school teachers, and may be appropriate for people interested in science education in other settings (e.g., museums, nature centers).   Students complete a minimum of 30 credits.  At least 12 credits of course work must be completed at the 500-level and at least 6 credits must be completed outside the Curriculum and Instruction program. 

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with an academic adviser to plan course selections.

Core courses (9 credits)

  • CI 550: Overview of Contemporary School Curriculum
  • CI 400:  Introduction to Research Literature or CI 501: Teaching as Inquiry
  • EDPSY 421:  Learning Processes in Relation to Educational Practices or ADTED 505:  The Teaching of Adults

Emphasis courses (12 credits)

Students select and complete 12 credits in Science Education and related area, such as:

  • SCIED 551:  History, Philosophy and Sociology of Science and Science Teaching
  • SCIED 597:  Environmental Science Education
  • SCIED 597:  Computer Tools for Inquiry-based Science Teaching
  • SCIED 597:  Science Content for Teachers - Food Science
  • SCIED 597:  Strategies for Science Teaching & Assessment
  • SCIED 597:  Nature of Science and Evolution

Electives courses (6 credits)

Students, in consultation with their academic adviser, complete 2 courses in EDLDR, INSYS, SPLED, or science content areas.  

M.ED. Research Project (3 credits)

Students carry out an applied research project (e.g., software development and testing, mini-course development and evaluation, or classroom-based action research).
