Graduate Certificate in Leadership in Elementary Science Teaching

The Program

This four course certificate program for elementary teachers concentrates on the nature of science, science content, and science teaching. 

  • There are no prerequisites.  
  • You have the option of taking one course or all course offerings depending on your area of interest. 
  • You may register for any course in the program.  There is no sequential order when registering. 
  • You may request a Graduate Certificate after completing the requirements with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

The Curriculum

Science Content:  3 credits required

  • Science Content for Elementary Teachers: SCIED 597 - 3 credits

Science Teaching:  6 credits of any graduate level science education courses are required.  For example:

  • Computer Tools for Inquiry-based Science Teaching: SCIED 597 - 3 credits
  • Science Education Curriculum: SCIED 597 - 3 credits

Research:  3 credits required

  • Teacher as Inquirer:  CI 501 - 3 credits OR
  • Introduction to Research Literature:  CI 400 - 3 credits

Getting Started

To begin this program, complete and submit a Graduate Nondegree Application

Courses are offered year-round in the evenings and on Saturdays.   Two courses are generally offered per semester, allowing you to complete the entire certificate program in one year.
